Programmes are getting rarer and more valuable

As programmes are no longer a major part of football clubs’ incomes, fewer and fewer are produced. It’s not common practice for a club to budget for the likelihood of just one in three spectators purchasing a programme.

In contrast, some 130 years ago, the first football programmes were given out free of charge and consisted of a simple piece of cardboard detailing the players and the club’s upcoming fixtures. The humble football programme of yesteryear offers a charming insight into not only our national sport, but our social history.

Since the middle of the last century, programmes have become increasingly more colourful and more sophisticated. You can find some excellent commentaries and reviews, amusing cartoons and great illustrative artwork. There are plenty of real gems out there!
